Montreal Trivia

Originally known as Ville-Marie, or City of Mary, the city of Montreal got its name from “Mount Royal”, which is the the hill at the center of Montreal. French is the official language of our city. In fact, Montreal has the largest French speaking population of any city in North America outside of France. Montreal is a very clean city, family friendly, and has many historical and cultural attractions.

Seems Japan has had it's share of natural disasters in the last few years. Early Saturday, another earthquake struck the east coast of Japan. The magnitude of the quake registered 7.3 on the Richter scale. It did trigger small tsunamis but,  there was no damage reported. The center of the quake was located far off the coast and hit at 2:10 a.m. Tokyo Time.

Fried Apple Pies

It’s always fun to discover and share a new tasty recipe. Some of the recipes I’ve found over the years are pretty close knockoffs of some classic favorite foods (maybe even an occasional junk food). Here’s an easy recipe if you’ve ever craved apple pies from the golden arches. Sure...go ahead and try it but, don't eat too many!
  • 3 green apples
  • One box of ready-rolled puff pastries
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • 2 or more cups of canola oil – depending on pot size (enough to submerge the pies)

—Peel apples, chopping them into little pieces, placing them into a pot on the stove.

—Add brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir until mixed.

—Cook on medium heat for 10 minutes (or until apples have softened). Remove pan from stove and let cool for 30 minutes.

—With a sharp knife, cut two sheets of ready-rolled pastry, each into 4 strips.

—With your finger, lightly wet the edges of each strip.

— Add 2 teaspoons of apple mixture onto one half of each strip. Fold the pastry over, and press a fork onto the edges to create little grooves around the pie.

—Cool in the fridge for 15 minutes.

—Heat oil in a wok (or deep-fryer). To gauge whether it’s hot enough, dip a small piece of puff pastry into the oil. If the pastry sizzles and browns in 10 seconds, it’s hot enough.

—Place two pies in the oil, cooking for 2 to 3 minutes (or until golden), gently flipping for even coverage.

—Once golden, gently lift each pie with a slotted spoon, allowing the oil to drain into the pot, then place on a plate lined with paper towels.
